I confess that I had forgotten about Joe Simmons until the re-release of "Black Alley" from 1991 by Channel 1. I had my review copy of the DVD and Fang, my partner, saw the cover and said "holy cow! look at that dick." But he (Joe) was a lot more than a big dick, he was a big presence. In every movie that I saw him in, he seemed to fill his every scene. A big guy (6'2"), but he wasn't fat or bloated, but he seemed big, and dominate. Just like his famous model work for Robert Mapplethorpe, he had a way of always being the center of attention. He passed away in 1995 of AIDS-related complex.
I confess that I haven't seen all of his films, but my favorites of what I have seen: "Black Alley" with Joe in two scenes, "Black Magic," also with Joe in two scenes, "Gettin' Down," with its huge cast and "Soul & Salsa 2" with Joe in a scorching scene with Kent Warwick. If you don't remember him, or he was before your time, check him out!
