The fallout from last week's canceled screening of Digital Playground's "Pirates II: Stagnetti's Revenge" at the University of Maryland continues as the University System of Maryland's Board of Regents today directed Chancellor William E. Kirwan to develop policy recommendations regarding sexually explicit material on state university campuses.
The screening, scheduled for April 4 in the student union, was canceled April 2 after lawmakers threatened to cut the University's funding if the film was shown. Students showed excerpts from the production on their own in a campus lecture hall Monday night.
Lawmakers have agreed to drop the funding threat if the state's universities develop a policy for showing adult material.
During the discussion in the state legislature last week, one state senator suggested denying any funding to a higher education institution that allows a public screening of a film marketed as a XXX-rated adult film — unless it is part of an official academic course.
The plan is to be presented to the regents this summer, before the Sept. 1 deadline set by the legislature.
