The Obama administration will most likely reverse the rule, but it will take a while. The rule is supported by many Catholic groups and our friends at the Family Research Council. Oh, and the rule will cost more than $44 million to implement.

The wording of the rule is so broad that it could allow pharmacies to opt out of selling contraceptives.

Anti-Gay Crime Up In America For 2008

A rash of attacks against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people across America suggests the number of reported assaults could rise in 2008, an advocacy group said.

The number of reported attacks against LGBT people increased 24 percent in 2007 over 2006, and they were expected to jump in 2008, said Sharon Stapel, executive director of the New York City Anti-Violence Project.

Officials were still crunching the 2008 figures, which will be released early next year, Stapel said.

Since the February fatal shooting of Lawrence King, a 15-year-old Los Angeles boy who endured harassment after telling classmates he was gay, "we are witnessing what appears to be an increase in both the occurrence and severity of violence motivated by racism, homophobia, and transphobia," said Stapel.

Stapel attributed the increase in part to more people reporting incidents, but she believed there actually could have been more assaults because 2008 was an election year.

"Election years are always violent years for us because of wedge issues," Stapel said, referring to ballot measures this year banning gay marriage in California and Florida. "With increased visibility comes increased vulnerability to LGBT stereotypes and violence. We've seen some of the most violent hate crimes that we've seen in a while."

Ex-Cop Arrested for Gay Serial Killings

An ex-policeman has been arrested in connection to the murders of 13 gay men in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Jairo Francisco Franco was apprehended after a witness identified him as the killer of a gay man in August.

Franco is suspected of all of 13 killings between February 2007 and August 2008 at Paturis Park, one of the city's popular gay beats.

Police inspector Paulo Fortunato says the police "have a credible witness who says he saw Franco pump 12 bullets into a black gay man inside the park."

A second witness said Franco visited the park frequently, "apparently cruising for gay men and victims," Fortunato said.

Police have dubbed the killer of the 13 men as the "rainbow maniac," a reference to the gay-pride symbol.

"We are convinced he is the rainbow maniac we have been looking for," Fortunato said.

A Day Without Gays

It's hard for me to believe a whole day without gays (hope they don't mean sex) but today December 10 is Day Without A Gay - a protest against the passage of laws banning same-sex marriage in the US.

Day Without a Gay, modeled after the 2006 immigrant’s rights protest that swept from California to Texas, is intended to show how important gay people are to the US economy.

"A day without gays would be tragic because it would be a day without love," reads the movement's website.

"On December 10, 2008, the gay community will take a historic stance against hatred by donating love to a variety of different causes.

"On December 10, you are encouraged not to call in sick to work. You are encouraged to call in 'gay' - and donate your time to service!"

The website includes suggestions for people who fear skipping the day at work, such as writing to politicians or discussing the issue with friends.

The protest is appropriately taking place International Human Rights Day.

Gay Porn Murderer's Life Sentence, All Over Brett Corrigan

Gay porn producer Joseph Kerekes, who originally insisted he was innocent, has pleaded guilty to the stabbing and arson murder of business rival Bryan Kocis.

Investigators believed Kerekes and an accomplice worried that Kocis' rival gay production company would prevent them from signing a porn star named Brent Corrigan, so they confronted him.

That confrontation ended in what the police investigators working on the case described as one of the most gruesome crime scenes they'd ever seen.

Kerekes was immediately sentenced to prison for life with no chance of parole after his guilty plea.

The plea was to a second-degree murder charge, admitting he was an accomplice in Kocis' brutal January 2007 murder.

Kocis' throat was slashed and his house burned down. Kocis was stabbed more than 20 times and was nearly decapitated.

Investigators believe Kerekes and his partner, Harlow Cuadra, traveled to Kocis' Pennsylvania home to kill him because he was a rival in the gay porn business.

At his court appearance, Kerekes said Cuadra "had murdered Bryan Kocis and had set his home ablaze." Kerekes then apologised to Kocis' mother, sister and father.

Michael Kocis said, "We will never forgive nor will we forget what Mr Kerekes has done to this family."

Kerekes has refused to testify against Cuadra. "I absolutely will not testify for the state case against Harlow," Kerekes said after his plea.

Cuadra's trial is slated to start in January, if found guilty of first-degree murder, Cuadra may face the death penalty.

Killer Of Gay Larry King Will Face Trial As Adult

A judge has decided that 14-year-old Brandon McInerney is competent to stand trial for the murder of gay schoolmate Larry King in February.

Judge Kevin McGee made the ruling after McInerney was evaluated by a psychiatrist and a psychologist to determine whether he understands the nature of the charges against him.

King, an eighth-grader, dressed in a feminine manner and told friends he was gay.

McInerney shot him dead at school on February 12, and the attack has been classed as a hate crime.

The accused will be able to stand trial as an adult, with a preliminary hearing for January 26.

The teenage McInerney faces a sentence of 51 years to life if convicted of all the charges.
